Live setup · Optional Ableton path · MIDI stays portable

Send recipes to Live when your studio is ready.

This page is the handoff checklist. Browse recipes on style pages, then come here when you need to confirm the difference between portable MIDI and the optional Ableton shortcut.

Where this page fits

Setup, not another recipe browser

Style pages carry the musical context and recipe lists. Live setup explains the handoff path so the action feels deliberate before anything reaches your DAW.

1. Browse Styles

Choose the musical lane and recipe on a style page. That is where recipe browsing belongs.

2. Pick the route

Download MIDI works everywhere. Open in Live is the shortcut when this Mac has the studio helper ready.

3. Keep producing

Treat the result as a scratch starting point: choose sounds, edit notes, arrange sections, and make it yours.

Try the handoff

Two examples are enough

These examples keep the buttons visible and testable. For real browsing, use Styles; every style page has its own recipe set and musical context.

Amapiano

Amapiano Piano Starter

112-114 BPM Open style

Piano pocket, log-drum bass, dry shakers and claps, and mallet responses.

What lands first

  • Dry percussion kit
  • Log-drum bass
  • Mallet response

Waiting for the local setup check. Download cooks a MIDI pack; Open in Live sends a scratch set when ready.

Acid house

Acid House 303 Session

122-126 BPM Open style

303 bass, 909 drums, short stabs, and a darker pluck lead that should leave the acid line in front.

What lands first

  • Acid bass
  • Driven 909 drums
  • Dark pluck lead

Waiting for the local setup check. Download cooks a MIDI pack; Open in Live sends a scratch set when ready.

The complete recipe surface lives on style pages, where the sound, rhythm, references, and commands agree.

How setup works

Keep the handoff deliberate

Ableton handoff should feel like a producer action, not a hidden mutation. Confirm the setup, then use the shortcut only when the studio path is ready.

  1. 1 Ableton Live is installed on this Mac.
  2. 2 The jamburgr Live helper is running locally.
  3. 3 The Ableton Remote Script has been installed and Live has been restarted.
  4. 4 You are using a new scratch set, or you intentionally chose the current set.

Readiness feedback

If the helper is not running, buttons stay disabled and the page keeps the workflow honest. Start the helper on the Mac that owns Ableton, then reload.

Decision guide

Choose the smallest useful route

If there is any doubt, download MIDI first. The Live shortcut is for convenience, not required to use jamburgr.

Use Download MIDI when

  • You are in any DAW
  • Live is closed
  • The helper is not running
  • You want portable files first

Use Open in Live when

  • Live is ready
  • The helper can answer
  • You want a scratch set
  • You are ready to edit clips

Go back to Styles when

  • You are still choosing a genre
  • You want more recipe options
  • You need musical context
  • You want references to study

Truth in the workflow

What this page will and will not do

Optional path

The core generator does not require Ableton. Standard MIDI remains the portable workflow.

Local only

Open in Live depends on a helper running on your Mac at localhost. The public website cannot reach your DAW by itself.

Scratch sets

Launches are for new working material. Do not send into a production Live set unless you intentionally choose that workflow.

No audio generation

jamburgr writes MIDI and notes. Your instruments, racks, samples, and mix choices make the sound.

Setup commands

Use these on the Mac that has jamburgr-live and Ableton configured. They are setup helpers, not requirements for downloading plain MIDI packs.

Install the Ableton Remote Script once, then restart Live.

terminal
jamburgr-live install-remote-script

Keep the local Live helper running while this page sends recipes.

terminal
jamburgr-live serve

Next stops

Use Styles to choose a lane, Recipe Guide to edit the recipe, and Docs for the full generator reference.
